"Christmas in April" first cut at the Carbondale Election Results

Looks like Brad won in a walk 56% of the vote. Picture is of your blog host, Brad and Dave More at the Cole Victory party. I almost went and visited Sheila's party, but I wasn't sure I could deal with that many sad State employees in one place.

City council looks like what I predicted before the primary and very acceptable. Haynes, Polhmann and Jack for city council, I sure hope that Lewin doesn't sneak in, but would be fine with Moore (he sure ran a fine campaign). I guess that the voters decided that the city is doing well and added a person who spent lots of time driving a very popular no smoking law. Congratuations to everyone who ran, this race was good for the city.

I listened to Haynes in the debate a little last night and liked what he had to say. I'm going to get off his back for a while, but I still think he needs to go to lunch with Mary Polhmann and talk to her. If they need a referee, give me a call. :)

Major and Rendleman win in District 95 and Elbert Simon off. As Simon loses this time, after winning a number of times before, you have to wonder how many people are reading this blog anyway? :) Did a paper endorse other people, how did we figure out that Simon should go all together and at the same time? I'm sure it wasn't this blog, anyone know what happened?

I found this entry by mistake, but it is interesting now. Found this too, guess he agreed?

I ended up voting for Navreet Kang because I like him and he is my insurance agent, but was fine with the park district results. I have more respect for what is happening over there then I did before the election.

I'll write some more tomorrow, but writing this made me realize how many words I have written about this election. It is kind of amazing.

Any of my Pro-Sheila Anonymous commenter's want to explain how they managed to screw this up so bad or did the voters of Carbondale figure out that they are better off with quality over "my bad"? If you don't have anything to say about this, don't worry, I do.

See you in the morning.

This election just proves that the former assistant governor is just bought & paid for. His campaign slogan of Cole -- Our Mayor is a misnomer. It should've been Cole -- Expensive Puppet.

To those who really know him, honesty & integrity are never used to describe him. It's more like he's a trust-fund baby looking for a purpose in life, & he ended up selling his soul to the devil. Karma can be a bitch.

This is brilliant stuff! "This election just proves" that he is bought at paid for? Your political thinking is weird.

I don't think you understand karma, you see if you did understand you would realize that Brad has been rewarded and Sheila punished because of Brad's good acts and/or Sheila's bad acts. Nothing better then someone from out of town with no clue joining in.

The good news for you PF is that all of us fat cats down here in Carbondale are going to expand our Woman's Center. Maybe that is your karma payback for "your girl" finding a pit full of poisoned spikes and jumping into it?

It is hard to elect someone who campaigns like an idiot, but she did get 44% of the vote. Only 6% behind Maggie. Pretty good running against a successful incumbent.

Do you think she is done as a candidate forever?

One of the strongest NATURAL proofs of the folly of hereditary right in kings, is, that nature disapproves it, otherwise she would not so frequently turn it into ridicule by giving mankind an ASS FOR A LION.

Talk about Karma? She can't hold a candle to her dad.

Her mistake was not going more negative. Cole has so many skeletons in his closet that Simon had no end of material to use, had she chosen to use it. That she didn't use that material against Cole is testament to her integrity.

She also should not have self-limited her campaign contributions. She would have been able to put that extra money to good use.

Negative campaigning works. She just didn't do enough of it, despite your belief that she did too much.

In a small town there are very few secrets that aren't known to everyone. Your idea of no end of dirt on Brad, lost this election for her. If she had just shut up after the primary, she would have won.

This whole smear by saying nothing is tiresome and disingenuous. If you have something to say, say it. Everyone is dying to know what you clowns are complaining about.

I have written that I would rather have smart and effective, then nice and ethical. Sounds like we agree that Sheila wasn't effective or smart about this campaign.

You will notice that Dave has a better picture then I do over the the Carbondale Dispatch (http://www.shawneenet.net/dispatch/index.html)?

Bummer, we were having a little blogger contest.

How would she have won by shutting up after the primary? You said that Brad didn't even campaign leading up to the primary, so now you are saying that if she had 'shut up' she would have won? What sense does that make?

So you'd rather have smart and effective rather than nice and ethical means that you don't care that Brad's an unethical scumbag? Gotcha.

PeterG said...

You just aren't very smart are you? When Sheila started to try to land political blows on Brad, instead of running a positive campaign, she was exposed as incompetent. She was caught in public with a knife, trying to stab Brad in the back (you watch that Channel 6 news story I blogged about?). She lost her message and no longer lived up to her campaign slogan. It was stupid.

Everyone is still dying to know what you clowns are talking about. Saying Brad is an unethical scumbag, just ruins your credibility in all aspects of your comments. Without reasonable facts, you are just spitting in the wind.

Your characterization of Brad as completely unethical is stupid and untrue. I'm sure he is a little unethical, we all are. But, when the lights are shining, it is your girl who looked the most unethical in this election and that killed her chances.

Finally, we all know that Brad will be a better mayor (if you base better on results) then Sheila. Sheila and her camp, just couldn't help themselves from throwing the mud and got dirty.

What are you clowns talking about anyway. What has Brad done that is so bad? Using a travel budget that was approved by the city council for city business is the best I have seen (and the voters just told you the answer on that issue). What have you got? You are posting anonymously you know.

Could you post a list here please?

Anonymous needs to start a 12 step program called "I Make no Sense Anonymous"....

Sounds like someone's a little bitter....awww....would you like a tissue....

PeterG said...

Anonymous just sent in a list of complaints, it is mostly same old stuff.

Travel to Cuba and Ireland. NOE liquor shutdown makes Brad a racist. Giving gifts to Ryan at Christmas. Not half masting the flag after Paul Simon died. I have written about all of it here before. "It" was so excited, it sent me the list pasted into the comment twice. Guess they had it typed out and ready?

Then it gets into stuff that is pure hearsay and BS. I have about an equal amount of stuff on Sheila people have sent in, but I'm not publishing any of that undocumented crap.

In case Brad Cole is reading this blog and these comments, I just wanted to extend my congratulations and let him know I'm very relieved and happy that he has been re-elected. I think he will reward all those who voted for him by doing an even better job as mayor these next four years. When does the next term start, by the way?

According to the Southern Illinoisan, your scumbag Mayor paid back the $573 that he was reimbursed by the city for his trip to Chicago for the swearing in of the immigration judge THE DAY AFTER THE ELECTION!

Well, fine people of Carbondale, you voted for the guy. You get what you paid for.

Anonymous from April 19th comment,

It always strikes me as contradictory when individuals who seek to improve political and civic processes and discourses, do so through the use of expletives instead of dialogue (which would be more productive). Read as a form of violence, such an attitude makes me want to run in the opposite direction.

'Scumbag' is an expletive? What word would you use to describe such a prolonged pattern of unethical behavior?

PeterG said...

A prolonged pattern of unethical behavior? By your standards, only by doing nothing could you be ethical. That is what you are suggesting isn't it?

No, that's not what I'm suggesting and you know it. It is not an either/or choice - to be unethical or do nothing.

When is Cole going to pay back the $4,500 for the trip to Cuba?

PeterG said...

I suggest that he will pay it back right after the rest of the Carbondale people on that junket give back their expense checks, don't you?

Anonymous,

First, it's difficult, and perhaps even dumb on my part, if not futile to try to have a reasoned conversation with an angry person, but here goes anyway. If Cole were to have to give back what you claim is an unwarranted travel expense, wouldn't Simon would have to do the same for the exact same trip (even more perhaps since she stayed longer) since she admitted to using the Law School's travel budget to fund her trip, and SIU is a PUBLIC university?

Furthermore, I can see the justification in a Mayor traveling to seek out the development of economic, and cultural/educational opportunities for two different communities, but I've yet to hear the justification for Simon's travel, do we have that information? At least Cole disclosed the reasoning behind his travel.

C'mon Anonymous!...Give me reasons! I'm a hard-core Democratic liberal and based on the information and arguments we have, I still see Cole as a better option. Gimme' something to work with!...Besides, it's all said and done, shouldn't we consider working with what we have instead of lamenting the past? What can we do NOW, TODAY, that'll better this community?

PeterG said...

I'm confused, if reimbursements for travel to Cuba were wrong, why did Sheila vote for it? She went because she is a lawyer and law professor? If Sheila is an expert, why didn't she provide a correct legal analysis in real time instead of waiting for years later? Either way, isn't Sheila sin greater?

How does that make anything a pattern?

Anyway, this thread is now closed. It is boring.
